Frequently Asked Questions

What are your lead times?

Our typical lead times are 3 weeks from receipt of payment for website orders. Bespoke items take a little longer, and have typical lead times of 5-6 weeks from receipt of payment and any C.O.M. (Customer's Own Material.)

Why are your lead times so long?

At Copper & Silk, we are dedicated to providing you with the highest quality lampshades possible.
Every part of our lampshades are made to order, including the wire frames and fittings, and it takes time to create by hand.
We can occasionally negotiate a shorter lead time if our production schedule will allow, and we will always do our best to improve lead times for you if we can.

How do I choose the right lampshade for my lamp base?

Finding the right lampshade for your lamp base is not easy, but there are a few simple guidelines you can follow.
If you have a square base with standard proportions for a table or desk light, then a mirror the style with a square lampshade.
Likewise, if you have a rectangular base, then you might want to consider one of our rectangular lampshades.
Tall lampshades suit tall slim lamps and tapered shades add a sense of classic grandeur.
If you want to place your lamp on low profile furniture, such as a mantelpiece, oval and rectangular shades are ideal for placing close to walls. Oval shades suit rounder bases whereas rectangles suit square and rectangle bases.

What kind of fixing does my lampshade need?

It is vital when ordering that you choose the right type of fixing for your custom lampshade.
Firstly, do you want the lampshade to be suspended from the top? That will require a pendant fitting.
If it needs to be supported from below, you will need a base fitting. We offer the standard UK E27 base and pendant fittings, as well as American finial fittings.
However, if your shade is large and pleated, it might be better to choose a finial fitting and one of our Adjustable Lampshade Carriers, so that the weight of your shade is spread more evenly.
If in doubt, please consult our Lampshade Fittings Guide.

Can I use my own material to make lampshades?

We are more than happy to work with Customer's Own Material (C.O.M.) If you would like to choose a material other than our standard range of silks and linens, contact us directly and we can tell you how much material to use, whether your material is suitable to make your shade and where to send it.

What does C.O.M. stand for?

C.O.M. stands for Customer's Own Material. Customer's often send us their own fabric to make lampshades. This option isn't available on the website, but if you would like to use your own material, please contact us.

What will happen to my C.O.M. when you've made my lampshades?

Any C.O.M. that is left over once we've made your lampshades will be carefully packaged up with your order and sent back to you.

How do I choose the right suspension for my pendant or ceiling light?

The best rule to follow is this: if your pendant measures 600mm or under, a cordset will be perfect for keeping your light balanced and suspended safely.
Anything over 600mm will require strong drop rods. They also come in a wide range of finishes so you're sure to be able to find one that complements the look you want.

What's the difference between a floating diffuser and a base diffuser?

A floating diffuser is set inside the shade and prevents the bulb from becoming visible, while still allowing the lining to be on display. This particular design "floats" without any visible fixings from below. It is worth considering a contrast lining to make the most of this feature.
A base diffuser fits to the base of the shade, also preventing the bulb from becoming visible. This design however, is more easily removed for cleaning. To improve light output, we recommend using a light colour on the diffuser and white shade lining.

Do you do re-cover or restore old, damaged lampshades?

No, this is not a service we offer. However, if the dimensions and style of the original shade are close to those of a lampshade in our range, we can quote to make a matching shade for you.
Alternatively, we can make the shade to your exact specifications as a fully bespoke order - see below.
